I Installed Advanced Road Design and no commands work - Problem in Loading Application
Posted by Shane O'Rorke on 13 March 2020 04:52 PM

You installed Advanced Road Design, and upon trying to run any command you get an error message appearing about 'Problem in loading application'.

This error typically would show in a Notepad file.

Advanced Road Design runs inside AutoCAD/Civil 3D, and uses the API (Application Programming Interface) in order to get information from AutoCAD and Civil 3D (eg: it uses the API to read surface elevations, alignment co-ordinates, as well as to write out surface and alignment data).  The error message is saying that Advanced Road Design is unable to find what it needs in order to run inside the application (there is no API access to the objects it needs).

This can happen for a number of reasons:

  1. Advanced Road Design was installed before Civil 3D had ever been run.  The first run of Civil 3D initialises the application and adds information in the registry (and other places) that Advanced Road Design needs in order to run.  Reinstalling Advanced Road Design fixes this problem.
  2. More than one instance of AutoCAD/Civil 3D is running.  Advanced Road Design 'attaches' itself to the first instance of Civil 3D, so if you are running from the 2nd (or third) instance then ARD doesn't get access to the API or data it needs.  You can fix this by closing down the other instances of AutoCAD/Civil 3D.  This is not the same as having multiple drawings open - this is having totally separate instances of the application open
  3. There is a problem with the install of the Civil 3D/AutoCAD API.  Doing a repair/install of your AutoCAD/Civil 3D and then reinstalling Advanced Road Design fixes this problem.

If there is still an issue after all of the above, then the computer environment may be conflicting with Advanced Road Design running - please lodge a technical support ticket for us to diagnose with you.

Version: Advanced Road Design (all versions).
